I fell in love with these cherries when I was given a can by a hotel where I stayed in Vinola, Italy. The small almost black cherries are in a thick very sweet syrup and are perfect over ice cream. A couple of tablespoons is sufficient – the sweet flavor goes a long way. The taste is the classic cherry flavor you would find in an old style ice cream parlor (like cough syrup - only really good). It's not the same as maraschino cherries. I can't find anything else like it.
